Working Together
I know I hurt you today
I am sorry is all I can say.
If seems as if life gets in the way
of our life from day to day.
We had our young years when we could
Make love all night, knowing the morning
for us would dawn bright.
We went to the ball games you played
I thought you the most beautiful sight.
So straight,trim and tall
You were head and shoulders above them all.
I wasn't the only one who thought that way
I could hear what your co workers had to say.
''Too bad he is married with three children"
Their words left me chilling.
But it was me you came home to every day
and me you made love to every night.
To day dream over you I guess they had the right.
We have had our middle years
A few of them at least.
When they all come home for dinner
I had to cook a feast.
Our golden years were so much fun
going places we liked
kept us on the run.
I had a job I loved and you were satisfied
What ever we wanted you supplied.
A trip to the mountains
Where the trees meet the sky
And we drank from ice cold fountains.
The pictures we made, summer, fall and winter
Remind me of that lovely apple smell
And the cider the apples did render.
So good on a cold evening,
mulled and left in the pot to simmer
The lovely place from that place
I will always remember.
The trips to The Gulf Coast
We stayed two weeks each year,
to the tropical sun and water we were lost.
Coming home looking like Indians,
Not long until the first frost.
All those years have passed and thus
The twilight years are upon us.
Nature following her own way
Struck you a blow one day.
It didn't take your mobility
or any of your sciences.
It took your memory
You don't know what you once could be.
Most of all you don't remember me.
Your having to learn all over
To be a person ,Father and my lover.
It is so difficult to think for two
That is why I lost it today with you.
You see I am just one person, and not so strong
as I once was,
I became ill with you with out having a cause.
I have explained that you can't drive just now
But you did any how.
We have to get my car fixed
I think your driving has been hexed.
The truck you tangled with
didn't have a dent.
My Black Beauty is asking
where the fright train went.
Getting it fixed with out our children knowing
Will be a fine day with summer wind a blowing.
What they don't know won't hurt them
Their view on their Dad driving is very dim.
So once again we continue on this mad adventure
This life we are living is a uncertain one to be sure.
But Know I love you, with all my soul and heart
We know even in death we will never be apart.
