The Four

A photo in the hallway
A scrapbook in the drawer
Videos in the cabinet
Memories of the four.

Maddie, sweet and shy
When they were little girls
Grew up with a vengence
Left them in a whirl

Kaylie took her life
When they were seventeen
They Never saw it coming
Until the funeral scene

Donna was the smallest
Yet the strongest of the four
Died at twenty-five
A car accident, no more.

Sarah alone is left standing
The miracle of the Four
For she was predicted to die
In the previous twenty years or more

Summers spent wild
Nights under the stars
Wondering about life
Driving fast cars

Adult-like passion
Masked by girlish glows
Four girls sentanced and lost
Tossed into the throws

Weird to see the memories
Lain scattered on the floor
Years of friendship and life
Now that death has evened the score

A photo in the hallway
A scrapbook in the drawer
Videos in the cabinet
Memories of the four.

Author notes

This poem is in honor of:

Madeline Carter, who was shot and killed by her boyfriend at age fifteen.

Kaylie Thomas, who committed suicide at age seventeen.

Donna Richards, who was killed after a drunk driver slammed into her car head on at age twenty-five.

AND

Sarah Hutchins, who was predicted to die of heart failure by age eighteen but survived.

They are legends where I am from and it is considered a miracle that their friendship can span even death.

May you rest in peace.
