A Father to Remember

Did we have a Father, blond and tall,
running hither and there?
No, he was dark haired, long broken
and sat upon his chair.

Would he ramble to us in his speech
about the world and such?
On the contrary, soft spoken,
he wisely taught us much.

His tongue got shorter day by day;
yet his deeds, volumes spoke.
Never from him were complaints,
as daily he awoke.

A cripple he lived in daily pain,
that never stopped his drive.
He's now numbered with the Saints;
and in my Heart alive!

Author notes

February 15th is my Father's birthday. He would have been 81 years old this year. We all miss him very much, especially my mother who is 7 years his junior. Please pray for the repose of his soul. His name is William.

    I agree, this man is a hero.
    Endurance with dignity is a wonderful quality.
    Certainly these are things he passed on along with his wisdom.

    Good write

    This did indeed touch my heart. Very beautiful. I agree with sunshine, very much from the heart. You have a great start as a poet.

    It's beautiful ~ even more beautiful that its true. Your dad seemed to be a special man, and you've clearly conveyed that in your poem. One written from the heart.

    Really says what he was made of by the lines:

    "His tongue got shorter day by day;
    yet his deeds, volumes spoke"

    I do believe the things you do, should speak for who you are.

    Thanks so much for entering this into my "Father's Day" contest ~ I truly appreciated reading your work.

    Best of luck to you,
    Florida Sunshine

      Thank you

      I cried when I wrote this poem. My father remains my greatest inspiration to this day. Although he's been gone for almost fourteen years, I am constantly reminded in every thing I do of his tremendous will power and integrity. I strive to be a credit to his posterity.
      Thank you for your consideration of my effort and your appreciation of the man I have portrayed . He truly was amazing!
      Sincerely, Jennifer Smythe DeGraw
