You were not a champion father
But as a friend you did prevail.
Never too harsh, a good talk would do.
You let me make my own mistakes,
And were there to help me after.
You worked often
But found the time to watch me grow up.
It must have been hard
Raising three children alone.
For the sacrifices you made
I am forever grateful.
I never knew how much you meant
Until it was too late.
We had a good day,
Talking and watching the game.
I had no idea it would be the last.
You and I went to sleep that night
Thinking we would both see tomorrow.
This is the first Father’s Day
Since you have been gone.
I feel strangely hollow,
As I see my friends go out with their dads.
We never did much on this holiday.
I wish we had done more.
I realize you were not perfect
But you were mine.
I thought you were a terrible father
But now I know
I was extremely lucky
Just to have known you.
Author notes
I didn't realize how lucky I was until it was too late.

although i will admit you showed an emotion very well in this writing.

Thank you for spelling everything correctly. That is a plus and you score major points for that. I oddly found this, in parts, soothing. Not in a great sense, but a small becoming kind of way. Your last stanza is well done and perfectly penned. Sometimes we need to finalize out thoughts to be able to move forward. And yes, often we are too late to enjoy someone's love and it is very sad. I think this is one of those poems that needed to come out. To be spoken out loud and left for everyone to see. Your truth in this piece was moving.
Thanks so much for entering and good luck.

This made me cry! Lovely work here. I hope you're doing fine.

I feel so sad for you. It sounds like you have nothing to feel regretful about but regrets seem inevitable when someone important dies.
Not a champion father perhaps but someone who cared and did his best.
Thank you for this write.
