Girls Who Wear Glasses

Is it smart to be smart
I always thought
it was
good grades
were a mark
of something.
But good grades did not bring
what I wanted
love and approval
from my parents
and put me in classes
with kids better than me
or at least thats how I precieved them to be.
Smart girls with glasses
who quote Shakespeare
and talk theory for fun
don't attract the guys
but slutty girls
who play dumb
and act bitchy do.
So I gave up
and slept with men
instead of falling asleep with books.
And got pregnant
and married
and continued to dumb down
for men dumber than me
as some sort of hedge
agianst abandonment.
But abandonment came anyway
and I finally got smart
and took care of myself
and mine
and decided that being smart
was better then being loved
and left.

    wow, Glenda... good to see you back. Had no idea of all the changes in your life but have visited your page and have the gist now, I think. You look different (and great). Hope all is going as well as can be reasonably hoped for after such a shift... Dorothy Parker is the one who said, "Girls with glasses don't get passes," and I read recently that she did not wear hers out in public, if possible.
