He saw her on her way outside,
and offered to give her a ride.
Oh so politely she refused,
and told him of a path she used.
It would lead her through the wooded park,
where she loved to travel after dark.
He wished her well and watched her go,
what he saw next was shocking though.
She didn't walk the path herself,
a stranger followed her in stealth.
Without a thought, he followed too,
though he wasn't sure what he would do.
The stranger didn't see him come,
that was just fine with him, then some.
He was sure he knew this stranger's face,
though his name he couldn't place.
They traveled deeper through the woods,
what the stranger planned could not be good.
The rescuer waited till the woods got thick,
and then he snapped a tiny stick.
With luck this would distract the stranger,
and alert the girl to hidden danger.
It seemed to work, the girl got scared,
as long as she was safe, he didn't care.
She safely made it to her door,
she would not be bothered he was sure.
He watched the stranger depart as well,
surely returning to the pits of hell.
With time to think, it hit him then,
that man had slaughtered seven friends.
He'd seen his face in all the papers,
and read about his horrid capers.
He got home and called the cops,
this madman had to be somehow stopped.
He told the police about that night,
they told him they would set things right.
The next morning he got a call,
they caught the monster after all.
They said he'd go away for good.
The rescuer agreed, he surely should.
