Walking beneath the crystal clarity
of ten trillion distant points,
where God has shed
endless dandruff
sprinkled liberally
on the black velvet
sweater of this night.
Warm desert breeze...95 degrees
caressing my hair and face
the world sleeps as I wander
amidst ancient spirits and spires.
The quiet is so loud that I find
myself thinking about
just how loud
the quiet is.
Only my cooking fire
emits an orange glow
the spit above it clean
except for the bits of fat
that hocked their way
into the blazing coals.
My sleeping bag lies waiting
its belly empty
its comforts not yet met
for dreams elude me
~
Where I chose to camp
was used before
it holds the remnants
of many other nights like these
in the ashes of
long dead tumbleweeds
and in the bones
of meals consumed
now buried in the sand.
I am not the first
to visit this place
nor will I be the last
but tonight it is
my prowling ground,
my howling ground,
to desecrate or
pay tribute to
as I so desire.
The cacti stand
silent witnesses,
the rocks mute,
as my footfalls echo
through the canyon walls.
These monoliths have
known for centuries
the blackness that swallows
all of the desolation of this land,
and they welcome it at eve.
Morning brings the brutal heat
and the relentless struggles
to survive again
until nightfall shades them.
Soon the sandman pays
a visit even here
amidst the vast storehouses
of his many grains,
my eyes grow burdensome
and so I amble back to
jot this poem
and get some sleep.
Beneath a speckled dome
where at long last I am
stretched out
H O R I Z O N T A L ,
I lie gazing at God's diamonds
whose brilliant cuts bedazzle
these desert skies.
Forever........
married to the earth
my eyes blink once..
then twice...
then thrice...
and find the absence
of all light
more suitable to my
restless mind.

beautiful. Words cannot express my admiration for this poem. The desert night, the isolation of a campfire, surrounded by a blackness so complete that it feels infinite. Starlight shines on desert souls. Very impressive...

Wow, incredible write. I'm originally from Utah so I can relate to this marvelous desert imagery you've painted so well. I like this poem just as it is. Thanks for sharing.

I really do not know what to say that could be close to doing this peace justice. Your words and the picture you paint are outstanding!

I love this analogy. You have such a wonderous way of thinking. Ihope you are a published poet, the world needs to read more of this type thing. Bless you and your talent.

Great descriptions! It is great to have a place all your own, even if only for a while. To have peace and tranquility, and a place to just observe the night sky. Awesome write.

Though the rest of your poem was beautiful, I have to say that the first paragraph was so deeply thought out and clever and I loved that part the most.
Great poem
