“Poison Poison Poison” (footnote to the 21st century)
It seems I have discovered the holiness just after everyone else forgot
But they didn’t forget, just traded it in for an imported cheap rip off
The television set is holy
The automobile is holy
The hot asphalt is holy
The McDonalds on every street corner is holy
The sky scrapper-ed skyline is holy
The exploitation of every 3rd world nation is holy
The ton of trash floating on a barge off the coast of New York City is holy
The drugs we pump into our food so we can have the ability to stomach it our holy
The drugs we pump into our bodies so we can have the ability to sleep at night our holy
The drugs we pump into our bodies so we can have the ability to wake in the morning out holy
The drugs we pump into our bodies so we can have the ability to live with ourselves our holy
The white house, a dollar bill, and a crucifix are our holy trinity
A diseased bloody steak of intolerance, ignorance, and indifference that’s been deep fried in piss, shit, and preservatives, our holy meal
And we drink out holy beer on out holiest of days
On the holy super bowl Sunday
Where we see the truly important battles being fought out
On a field of holy fake grass

Do you see why I have trouble singing a holy mantra of my own
My Litany can not be writ
The mood has moved from silly to insane
They have silenced all howls to a faint whisper of a rumored yelp
The cigarette is poison
The air we breathe is poison
Compassion is poison
Honesty is poison
Concern is poison
Equality is poison
A plea to end the damning madness is poison
The river is poison
The trees are poison
The sent of a lover is poison
The children’s toys are painted in poison
Spinach is poison
Now the tomato is poison
How much longer until they tell us the holy soy bean is poison
Allen,
What happened to that perfect vegetable kingdom I too once dreamed of?
And when did living an honest, decent life become so dangerous and deadly?

Hope you can enjoy this without getting all the references to allen ginsburgs poems "howl" "america" and "holy holy holy"(footnote to howl). they are amazing and you should read them anyways.

i get the references, good job with those. just a few things: sent should be "scent" and there are a few times when you say "out" when i believe you're trying to say "our"...maybe i'm wrong, it's your poem so you do what you want . i like the repetitiveness of this piece and how you appear to be writing to ginsberg. the first two lines and the stanza about drugs are my favourite parts. thanks for entering!

Wow... what can I say ... it truly captures the attention of the reader.
