When we were but small children
And the year was ninety nine
The shots rang out near Littleton
And flew to thirty-five
The students not much older
Than we were, as they fell
They cried as their peers screamed
"Tonight we go to Hell!"
Mere children, trembling in fear
As teachers, friends, were killed
Asked among the books and shelves
If their God left them fulfilled
Brave hearts answered with honesty
Swift death was their reward
As two boys that the world forgot
Spewed hate with every word
Could this have been prevented?
Most likely, the answer is no.
What has been written in the stars
No human can forego.
It breaks my heart to hear their tale
The saga of their grief
I spend each April twentieth
On a hilltop with a wreath
The hilltop is within my mind
And the wreath is always real
But neither fact will change the way
The dead's loved ones still feel.
Two young men that were preyed upon
By insanity and by hate
Took out their rage on thirty-five
Of Columbine's good and great
In April of nineteen ninety-nine
A tragedy took place
No matter what songs we may sing
The pain still left its trace
There still are mothers who cry tears
So bitter, angry, sad
There are still graves with young ones' names
There are still scars so bad
There is, however, hope unbridled
In the ashes of death
The flower this high school was named for
Grows tall and draws its breath
It takes its nourishment from those
Whose lives are gone today
Their memories will never die
The live on in us and in our colors stay
Columbine High School was attacked
By two boys with guns.
We will not forget what happened,
But we will stand in the sun.
