[ The truth about poetry ]

The truth about poetry

We’ve heard that poetry could wake the dead
That it makes the world go round
And if death and famine should strike us
We could live on it alone

Weve heard that poetry is who we are
Its beauty is in our hearts
Its rhythm shapes our lives
And its rhyme is our voice

Here’s the truth about poetry
Poetry cannot wake the dead
Only God knows what makes the world go round
And what idiot wants to digest paper?

Poetry isn’t who we are, were actually human beings
Poetry isn’t beauty, its only ink on paper
And we are the ones who shape our lives
Not just some words

So why do we write poetry
Why do we waste our time?
Because by writing on this paper
We have written on your soul.

    I love these lines...
"Only God knows what makes the world go round
And what idiot wants to digest paper?"
They're just dripping with cynicism. I also like the very last line quite a bit. However, I think you can even carry on further about why we do write poetry and what its effect on us is - instead of leaving us with such an unromantic (but truthful) observation. Maybe you could write another poem on it.

Interesting perspective. Pretty humorous but with a real thought at the end (not sure if you meant "your" soul or "our" soul.)
I read your response and have to say I would not have guessed it's the second poem you've ever written.
Definitely know where you are coming from when it comes to hating reading poetry. I often find my poems to be inaccessible and not worth reading. That said, I know that for someone else the words may be magic, and the words that inspire me might be just a poem away.

    Wow~

This is such a strong piece. An interesting concept though. In the middle, it seemed like you hated poetry and through it was a waste of excuse or something. I was thinking, "then why in the world are you writing a poem?" But the end of the poem made it all the better! This is a deep write, well done my poetic friend.

Well this was the second poem Ive ever written...my first would be circus tent. But anyway it sounded like I hated poetry because I somewhat did, I hated reading it, it sort of reminded me of a rhyming soap opera. So, this poem was my thought process back then, "I sort of hate poetry, but heres the reason I'm writing one"

and Ive grown to love it. Thanks for the comment.

An interesting take on writing poetry. Your right about it being just ink on paper. But its the reaching out to others that gives it its magic. As you say, reaching out to other souls. Nicely said!
