You started in the early morn;
Now you're miles along your way.
You pull into a crowded spot
For the best part of the day.
There's vans and trucks all round you;
Full of folk with the same idea.
It's not just a pause in a dreary journey,
There's a better reason we're all here.
The reason's been well advertised
For those who're in the know.
Drivers all around this land
Know why the flag's on show.
It is a universal symbol
On road's from moor to coast.
Beneath it you will find a place
That serves more than tea and toast.
There's eggs and there's bacon
Fried bread and blacking pudding too.
And whether your preference is for coffee or tea
You're sure of a powerful brew.
So if you're ever driving along a major road;
And you see a flag flapping in the air.
Why not stop a while and sample
The unhealthily appetising tasty bill of fare.
The medics will all condemn it
It makes the cardiologists swoon.
But us drivers we love the places
That we all call "The Greasy Spoon".
Author notes
Alas a luxury the doctors no longer allow me to indulge in. No more egg banjos ARGHH

We have "Greasy Spoons" in my neighborhood. I am telling you, grease is one of the best seasonings.
I have dined at many. Great rhyming poem here friend. I had to chuckle.
Much Love ♥

mmmm....I love a bacon, egg, hashbrowns and toast breakfast at a greasy spoon! With orange marmalade on the toast! yum! But I don't have it often! ***Pam***

Breakfast Is My Favorite Anytime
WOW! Jim, this sounds like some of the truck stops that I encountered back in the day. The food might not have been good for you, but it sure did have a good taste when you were hungry.
Good job as always, and put together very well. I enjoyed this one and it was cleverly written.
Thanks and have a great day,
Ron

Breakfast - the meal that even gives the lawyers apoplexy. Just what makes "A Full English Breakfast" as it is often described? I rarely found two places with the same ingredients but, like you, I always used to enjoy the taste and it stopped those hunger pangs
Thanks for stopping by.

Oooo...I could see how that would change your view on lifestyle choices. Yikes! My mother had seven stints put it in two years and still hasn't changed. I still give you kudos for what you are doing.
Ha,ha! You can call me HM any-time and nope, not related to Mrs.Windsor,LOL. I researched Buck House and it came up with Buckingham Palace. Cute way of saying it.Duh on me. I should of got the hint when you mentioned Mrs. Windsor.

Thanks for stopping by. It's good to hear from old friends on the site. I had been playing with this idea for a few months but a weekend with a 120 mile commute crystalised my ideas
I'm glad you liked the rhymes now to polish the flow

You betcha ...
nothing like those roadside diners and you shared the tale like only someone that travels could, because driving makes me hungry too! Nice job and so sorry to read your author notes and that sure takes the kick out of the caffine! joy

Hi again!
I am learning to enjoy the taste of decaffinated joy now
plus every once in a while I can still have a 'breakfast' but I have to do extra exercises that week
Life still good!!

Greasy food...
Sometimes I go culinair mad
and cook something fatty
but after the first bite
my stomach starts to fight
I like it too...the poem!!!

I think I too would try
Some favourite delicacy to fry.
But now I no longer can
I've thrown away my frying pan!!
