Go On and Burn

(verse one)
What I thought was an inferno was really just a single flame
What I thought you would change just stayed the same
I wanted to leave lipstick on your skin like third-degree burns
I wanted to be your everything, give you everything you never earned

(chorus)
Go on and burn like the edges of the poem you wrote to me
Go on and break like my heart when you lied to me
Go on and burn like poison on her flawless skin
I hope she's pure enough for you since my love was such a sin
Go on and burn like the hellfire of all that we were
cuz your eyes and your lies made me feel so secure
All the stupid lessons that you'll never learn
Go on and burn

(verse two)
There's a stain on the rug from when we turned to ashes
and I'll stand and watch as your heart falls and crashes
I was stumbling though the heavy smoke
hanging on every lie that you spoke

(chorus repeat)

(bridge)
And I'm smiling as you scream my name
completely engulfed in that flame
I'm laughing as you drop your head in shame
How does it feel to lose your own game?

(chorus repeat)

Author notes

Well... I don't know if it fits in the contest, but I think of fire as a metaphor for both love and hate.

I wrote this with my friend Amanda.
