Mask And Child

To my dearest mask,
It is a game we play,
No more actors need be cast
It’s just you and me today.
Thankyou for being a face
I hope it won’t take long,
I need you to take my place
I need you to be strong.1

My Child I hear you,
I will stay by your side,
There is no more you need do
The time you need I will bide.
Deep scars need to heal
A broken heart to mend,
A need once again for you to feel,
To you, these things I’ll tend.2

To the face that hides me
Today you served me well,
Wether I can return to norm
Only time will tell.
The people that came and went,
To those I may seem brave,
Looking closer they’d see me
A heart that could be saved.3

My Child do you doubt me?
The ability to protect –
It’s there for your defense,
A personal safety net.
Child I love you dearly,
I do not wish you pain,
I could not see you come to harm,
So here I will remain.4

My closest friend,
I will tell you of the past
Of all the direst things,
Those that made me need this mask.
My mummy she was not kind to me,
She was not very fair;
The hitting, screaming and kicking-
It was too much to bear.
Daddy was rarely home,
So these things he did not see,
All the pain she caused;
The way she tormented me.5

As I grew older
My friends did not believe;
I could not say a word,
Help I could not receive.6

My lonely Child,
No wonder you did break;
Since they did not believe you,
The title of friend I’ll take.
No more crimson tears,
No sadness upon your face,
No longer will you cry at night,
For I will take their place.
Your mother dear Child,
She should nurture you;
Fathers are meant to protect-
I guess I’ll do that too.7

Child you deserve more,
A better life to live,
So I will be your mask;
A gift for me to give.8

My dearest mask,
I can now fight the tears,
With your false smiles and lies;
Without my inner fears.
You’ve taught me well,
Hopefully I’ll make it through,
To live until I find another,
Who sees me as you do.
