I never melted

Me.  marble man.
Watching the door for the sign of your rosy faces,
staring, exclaiming,
running outside to pattern the snow with footprints,
drape a scarf round my neck, fit me with your mother's best bonnet,
and laugh.  A warm, Winter laugh.
I don't mind.
Think I liked the attention really.
Once, you hugged me, and I felt your warmth, but you shrank away from my ice heart.

The nights were mine, the moon I befriended,
and, before the nights ended,
I made a wish upon a star for you.
The snowman from nextdor sometimes came,
and we'd chat about what we'd done during the day.
We had parties too,
with all the snowmen in the lane.
They melted.
I watched them go, one by one,
and waited for my turn to come.
Felt no fear.  New it was time to depart,
but you would always be close:
warm in my ice heart.

I never melted.

Frost splintered and shrank to puddles beneath my feet,
they evaporated.  And I was left
alone
standing among new Spring shoots.
Out of place.  Where were you?
I never saw you at the door, rushing to put your boots on, pulling hats down over your eyes!
Once, I thought I saw a face, but it was my reflection.
Once, I felt your arms embrace me; I shook myself awake.

Me.  Marble man.
The sun glitters on my marble, but there's noone to see;
I never melted.
