The Rambling Poet

"The message is fine, but
the mechanics are nil."
My writing falls "short of
the forms" and schemes of
traditional poetry. (A Raspberry
I make to those comments here.)
So often I get these comments;
"more prose than poem" as far
as our 'technical' judges are
concerned.

Haven't they ever read the works
of Walt Whitman to know that to
each person poetry is something different?
Apparently they DON'T know what poetry is.
Like beauty is defined in the eye
of the beholder, a poem is defined
by the poet's own personal style
and structure.

Author notes

Inspired by many an AP judge on this site, and the ever-controversial 19th Cent. American poet Walt Whitman.

In a list

I've often written on what poetry 'is.'

If it's any condolence, I think you're message and mechanics are fine.
More power to you! I fully agree in poetic beauty being a direct relation to individual preference and perception. I like having an appreciative look at poems rather than style-strict tunnel vision.

Great message for all poets who like to express in different ways! For every poet, there is a quill, ink, and a medium...equipped with the power of the mind, heart, and soul, limits are destroyed, energies unlocked, and a galaxy of thoughts is suddenly within reach, ready for the taking.

I hope I'm not one of those "critics". I really like this, and think it's more poem than prose!!! How's that?

I hate those kind of comments. I think it is whatever the author wants it to be. There are no definites in poetry

    how true

So many self appointed poetry "gods" on here that have their own strict set of ideas about what a poem is. I just ignore them usually, God bless you and keep you, Mark

    A lovely definition of poetry.

However, I request the required author's notes. (Author's name in the notes.)

Thanks in advance. I enjoyed this. It was nice.

You've defined the art of poetry well. It is indeed an individual endeavor subject to no universal law. Good write and good luck in the contest. Happy trails
