A Sonnet For A Fine Lady

Missing image

I’d like to write these words about my Mum
to me the finest lady in the land,
I don't remember days when she was glum,
she always found the time to hold my hand.

To emulate her life is what I hope
a loving soul who always cared for me,
with endless fortitude she seemed to cope
and raised her daughters just the way you see.

But as she aged, the tables slowly turned

where she had tended me, I cared for her,
the cancer in her body always burned
some days toward the end were just a blur.

My love for her will always linger on
She lives within my heart, though she is gone.

this is very well written.......very touching and emotional......when i read it i felt there are so many things that this poem wants to speak out.....but we poets are confined to using words.......words that cant describe the emotions intact.......

But as she aged, the tables slowly turned

where she had tended me I cared for her,

i liked these lines the best.....may be because it relates to me and rather to every1......

    all the best

Wonderfully simple poetry, meter superb content equal to it, a good sonnet for a great lady
I so enjoyed reading this poem.

  • Beautiful sonnet, I envy those who have the patience and talent to write a good sonnet ;-)

Cancer is such a horrible disease and even more than that it's painful to watch someone pass away from it. Thank you for entering.

"To emulate her life is what I hope"

This line is the finest tribute a parent could hope for from a child.
The lady in the picture is beautiful. From your sonnet we gather she was also a woman of grace and strength.
The poem is fine in form, but it is memorable for qualities identified in the writer and subject by its content.

This is so sad but perfectly writtn. The meter is in iambic pentameter and the Volta is well pronounced at L9 like any world class sonnet. Bravo!

    Love,

It is so hard when we have to care for sick or aged parents, losing sight of what is happening when things get difficult.I am sure this is nature's way of helping us cope.Your Mother will have known just how important your care was at that time and I am sure she still does.A lovely poem, Ros

Somewhere your mum is smiling and at peace now. For as she reads these words thehand of God is gently holing hers and saying... You are blessed to have such a daughter
