I.
Crickets cracking in the wheat,
baby birds hanging over edge of nest,
bleating lambs and sky-kick calves,
that kind of summer
II.
sunset’s flowers feigning faint,
while seducing night wings with perfume
and blink at stars with heaven’s eyes
and Sister Moon who shrugs in heated clouds
that kind of summer
III.
butterfly waltz to the hum of bees,
a flick of tail and a squirrel’s chatter,
a hammock swung between two Pasture Pines
under a skyful of tatted shade
that kind of summer
IV.
I imagine the memory full-scented,
like breeze that brushes the silvery sage,
cool of riverbed stretching on to cool sand,
fire of a sun with its wavering aura,
that kind of summer
V.
a father mowing grain like mother folds sheets,
dancing clothes on a wire line,
children pinning tents out of willow’s lean,
sweating farmhands using polka dot handkerchiefs
and my feet press hard on new pavement wondering
if I can ever have again
that kind of summer

That kind of summer.
So many Memories I felt like I was still standing on our front porch so many years ago I could see that weeping willow in the corner of our front yard and the pine trees lining the Hillside.
You have said it all and said it so well.
Thank you for your entry and good luck in the contest. -

what a very nice mood you create with these vignettes - yes ... I hope we get that kind of summer here, too...so far, only a LOT of rain...lolol...I'm not complaining, though, as it can get very hot...and there is nothing like a country summer with a nice breeze coming in the screen door at night..
this is beautiful

First of all, I love the painting; I knew as soon as I saw the willow. What beautiful memories of summer, my Friend. Good luck in the contest, Sweetie.
