Like Always, I Heard the Rhythm First

Like always, I heard the rhythm first.
Well ... my pulse heard it before my ears.
then the melody ... notes that find and sooth
the locomotions of movement in the beat.
Rhythm, melody and chords punctuate
the air, and when I resist no more,
let the music move my body like the wind
whips wet clothes on the drying line,
I can forget the other beats that drown
out our souls and take us from each other:
hurt, and longings, and want, and desperation and
the relentless pounding pulse of all that aloneness.

Writhing in the trance of the music
finally ... I find the Betweens:
The air between the notes, beats,
counterpoints and accents;
the blank canvas upon
which pigments prance;
the vast space separating galaxies;
capacious voids interjacent atoms
and punctuating particles of being;
the gaping chasms betwixt us.

In trance I can crawl and creep
into the assurances of betweens
and make the vastness small,
and warm and embracing.
Because where we are lost to
each other in the cacophonies,
we find each other
in the Betweens.

Body surf the melody and beat,
silences between do not exist.
Become the Betweens, where the fabric
of nothingness is the warming blanket
connecting all the trilling stars,
and the illusion of separation ceases.

Author notes

If you've come across my pieces before you migt notice the theme of "the Betweens" circulate throughout the catalog. While matter matters to most, it can not exist without the media of nothingness, and sustains a key metaphor this body of work. I can not at this point explore it enough. Here is it again. Between.

I have been waiting for the musical manifestation. Thank you to the contest offerers.

Contest prompt:

"Music was my refuge. I could crawl into the space between the notes and curl my back to loneliness."

    Yeah...I think Stevie said it best when he said,

    "I use heavy strings, tune low, play hard, and floor it. FLOOR IT. That's technical talk."

    See? He was also a brilliantly humble guy too. This is a testament to anyone who loves music. There is a place to crawl in, when you play, especially. I've known guitarists to play a whole set without opening their eyes. Its that hole, and it's all good.
    Nice little trophy to go on it I see, good for you,
    peace,

    It's exciting, the whole world of space you're so interested in. Great portions of my time are spent learning perspectives toward silence, emptiness, and space, since - to paraphrase Alan Watts - he who thinks all the time has nothing to think about except thoughts. The sky has shown me a lot which allows me to confront this poem of yours with excitation.

    The "Betweens" surely couldn't be explicated in one or two poems.

    "...make the vastness small..."

      Thank you Lanternhearted for finding this.

      The 'betweens' do not seem to excite others as much as they do me, or imbue the reverence I feel for them.

      So it is a pleasure to find kindred. I have another called the "betweens" that touches obviously on the same subject.

      Thank you for stopping by.

  • This is pure magic!!! I know how much your music means to you... and I found this completely captivating... how it entrances you and in what ways... how the music relfects emotion and situations...

    The 'betweens' are certainly fitting here!
