Dragon and Cat

This is the tale of Dragon and Cat,
the unlikeliest of friends, but there's so much more to that.
See Dragon was so huge and he could reach the highest tree,
but Cat she was nimble on her paws, so alive and free!

Dragon was good at basketball and on the water slide,
he'd hit the pool real hard and make the waves give Cat a ride.
He was powerful and loving and if that wasn't enough,
when anyone would pick on Cat they learned how very tough.

One day Dragon and Cat went prancing through the fields,
they picked the pretty flowers and wrapped daisies into shields.
Then, out into the distance they heard a woman cry,
it sounded like the princess in the echos passing by.

Cat climbed up on Dragons back and looked out toward the cave,
"shes in trouble" gasped Cat, "she we must now save".
Dragon with his long legs ran as Cat held to his neck,
the wind blew back her ears as they galloped on their trek.

At the cave they heard the Princess crying in the stone,
she must have got stuck in the hole and now was all alone.
"Don't worry princess" Cat called down "don't give up on your hope",
then looked around for vines to weave into a sturdy rope

She worked making a strong long line to drop down through the bend
but it couldn't reach by itself unless guided at the end
now Dragon looked at Cat, they had trouble at the center,
Cat was to small to lift her and Dragon too big to enter.

"I've got an idea" exclaimed Cat, "we can work this out together",
"you can lower me into the cave, to you I'm like a feather".
So, Cat tied an end to herself the other 'round Dragon's wrist,
he lowered her down carefully as she worked the entrance twist.

"Here Princess, take this rope and we will get you free",
she did as Cat climbed on her back and soon the light they'd see,
Dragon with his powerful form hoisted them with one pull,
the princess gazed in gratitude, her eyes in tears were full.

"Oh thank you Dragon thank you Cat, I thought my life might sever,
at the castle I'll reward you for your faithful brave endeavor".
the Princess and Cat then got onto Dragons back,
and he galloped them to safety like a speeding train on track

The moral of the story goes that if your big or small,
no matter which you are, there are talents in us all.
Without Dragon, Cat could not have done what she did do,
and without Cat, Dragon could have never done it too.

  • The poetry is fresh and unpretentious, but also quite accomplished. There might be a few bumpy phrases or orthographic eccentricities here and there, but the narrative is too compelling for even a dedicated pedant to be distracted from continuing with the tale. The rhyming is delightful, simple yet interesting and intelligent.

I agree that presentation of this poem as an illustrated story might be well worth looking into. (I would even volunteer my services for the art, but my eyes are so shot that I find it difficult to draw or ink with any kind of detail or precision anymore, and I have never learned to use computerized graphics tools beyond scanning finished pieces.)

how much do you think it would cost me to have a artist make the pictures for it?

      • Not a clue....

but you know there are many fine graphic artists here who could help you. You really should think about it! my smilies are being eaten again!

wow this was an amazing story told in such a poetic form. Honestly, I don't know how it works into the theme of my contest, but I don't have the heart to remove it. But I do like this, good job with it!!!

I like the mood to this. It rhymes and has a nice movement. It is fun to tickle to tongue for the reader. Youthful in its excitement and flow that has happeniness written across the page.
