I'd rather dwell on and in life's day and light,
but tonight - tonight I deal with the darker side of life.
The darker side...in my room tonight, dwelling with me
by my bedside is a loaded gun, to protect me and my loved ones
from those who have threatened to harm us.
There's a loaded rifle by the back door, and upstairs
enough rifles and handguns and ammo to turn the house
into Fort Apache. Trust me, you don't want to be here,
not for the next few nights, for a while as a matter of fact.
I have night watch until 3 AM, and then dad takes his turn.
We live out in the county, in an area full of outcasts,
drug producers, sellers, and dealers - a large part of
the local population, as far as the county is concerned.
And out here in the county, they mean business when you're not
on their good side, and the local sheriff is 45 minutes away.
A sad state of affairs, it started like most out here,
just doing one's civil duty of reporting child abuse:
a child being physically abused by her parents.
She told her teacher at school, who's responsible
recourse was to notify the appropriate authorities.
Unfortunately, the drug-dealing mother and the felon father,
recently released from prison, were not happy in the least
to be confronted by the police and the report filed, the
testimony of the child well documented, and the teacher,
the only one she told her secret to...that wasn't good.
Had she openly told more people, we would not be targeted.
These people are on the lam, but they know where we live.
Others do, too; most children from the school know our address.
But now I'm off to make my rounds, to check the front of the house for
suspicious activity and to check on all windows and doors.

this makes me feel so sad...dealing with the misery that would come forth, this Armageddon almost seems to have already bound earth.
-
your words sound too scary to be true ... I can't even imagine how you can keep your spirit high in such a situation ... this is worse than a horror-movie ... my thoughts are with you ...

Very well written. I quite creepy. I mean It's true though, that now a days people would go through such measures just to hurt other people. I agree with everything that "Walking shadow" said. It's hard to live life on the dark side like that! This was a very good write and good luck in the contest!!!

Creepy
Very well written. Creepy to know that some people will go to such an extent to do such horrible things terrorizing others. We do live in a sick and twisted society. Good luck -
