Blue

As I fight the tide of people in these overcrowded, drama-tinged hallways, I am sinking deeper into blue than my sanity can handle. The same blue that the willow surely feels, as she listens despairingly to the rush of her darling stream to the far-away sea.

Ashton’s form brushes by, bathing me in his warm, yellow glow. I smile, briefly blinded, caught in the shimmering haze. Thoughts of him taste like sweet, yellow honey in my mouth, until, with the appearance of Liam, thick, blue smoke sweeps back into my head, into my lungs.

Scarcely breathing, suffocating in the blue, all images of Ashton are forgotten. As he passes me, my tongue trumps my mind, and I turn to say hello. Liam is surprised that I’m speaking to him—so am I. He begins to tell me how he’s been since he left me, and the watery blue emanating from his words dye my just-recovering mood to match.

Suddenly I see a light in his eyes—yellow. The same blissful yellow that he just
ripped from my clutches is shining from him—but not for me. Watching his eyes dart after Mika’s blurred, feminine shape, I find that inside I am nothing but green.

I’m as green as the rising sun must be, left alone, watching her beloved moon chase after the stars. I am green and turning red—horrible, wrathful red—as our conversation shifts to Liam’s interest in her. The blood inside my wounded heart boils, red and stinging from his salt-laden gaze.

Awakening from a momentary mental shut-down, I realize that I am letting fly the most venomous words I possess, powered by the red in my brain, injected with the green in my heart. I take satisfaction in, with quiet and searing words, pushing Liam, my long-lost Liam, off of his yellow high and into the blue depths below.

And as he walks away, wilted, I find that I, too, am blue.
