Strange Fruit

Drunken tirades
leave a putrid odor
throughout the South
as magnolia trees
burn with flesh.

Licorice bodies
whip in the wind
on poplar branches
as contorted faces
peer strangely fixed.

Cries of fear
and outrage unanswered
as 'good people' look away
admonishing children
to do the same.

Flames lick
and winds blow
as memories of strange fruit
emblazon on guilty minds.

This is a haunting song that was written by Billie but was recorded by "Lady Day" who was her title under another lable due to the controversial subject.

  • OMG so poetic. and the delightful use of language is making me drunk with joy...though this is a somber poem. But still of greatness and inspiration that teaches us of a past we should never have had. BRAVO!

    • This was a hard one to write, but I think I could have chosen a better song to write about. Hmm, afterthoughts are usually such eye openers. lol

I know not the historical event but I'm almost certain the scenario played out perhaps more times than the song. Good luck in the contest.

    Sincerely,
