Fruits of The Labors

Simple repast
held by hand-hewn sideboard,
fruits of the labors
of an aged pair.

Loving fingers,
a potter's mold
and graceful weavings
of laden baskets.

Crusty bread
of old-world style
broken with prayer
for health and strength.

Wine that will transform
into life's sustenance
drunk along with
fruits of the labors.

Author notes

I took the liberty of using both the background and the picture. I cannot give proper credit for either, therefore, if it is inappropriate to use them for this contest, I will remove them upon your request.

  • Now let us see your beauty poet!

    And, I am not disappointed!
I love this poem for its Wordsworthian strength of simplicity.
It may not run deep but it runs smoothly and satisfyingly. I agree with leo2. And Pamela.
It is also a plus that you took notice of a comment for the better before my judgement.
    Lyndon of the Winklings.

  • You are more than welcome to the background. In fact, I like seeing it used.

I loved this beauty. The wine, two tallest forms in the image, represents the caring love you so beautifully express in this piece. Well done to this image prompt.

Best of luck in the judging. ~Pamela

This is a very calm and inspiring poem, taking the image and interpreting it into a life of work and faith. I like the mention of natural materials, wood, ceramics and baskets, and the food. One jarring word, drink, drank, drunk - perhaps the latter-most is better there. Good luck!

    • Thank you, Dear Margaret, for the lovely comment as well as the gentle helping hand.

It has that feel of time gone by, and of common folk, working the earth, living simply--beauty in that simplicity. Writers and painters have searched for that beauty, just like that painting you used here and just like your poem. A worthy addition to the genre.

Is that pizza on the right side of the table? Can't be.

    Beautiful poem.

  • Words that paint beautifully the feelings left on the canvas.

  • Wow girl! This is wonderful. Very soothing and made me think of my Grandma's sideboard. Awesome write. You choice the perfect picture and border for this poem. Well done. Good luck in the contest.
