He Never Knew

You said we had another year
Of working this out
Another year of annoying you,
Of learning to trust you again,
Of becoming the friends we once were.

I want my year.
I want all the chances in the world
To tell you how much I care,
And to thank you for being
The one who made me see
How special I am.

I want to tell you
That through everything
(lies, confusion, pain, pretending)
You were always my best friend.

Now you’re gone

You’re on that plane to boot camp,
Then to Iraq,
Then, as you put it, to death.

I never told you
(and now never will).

But you’ll always be my marine.

Author notes

Well there was this guy I fell in love with last year, and it had alays been his plan to go into the marnines. I was always afraid of that, for obvious reasons. Then he cheated on me and our friendship never really healed. this year he was a senior, and he failed English- meaning no graduation. So you know, I kind of planned that we would have a whole year to make up, to become friends, stuff like that.... then someone tells m hes leaving for bootcamp tomorrow, that he decided not to graduate.

Please tell me what you think

This is a touching poem... it is so very well written and I really like the way you can leave so much to the readers imagination without losing any of the potency I wish you the best... I don't really know what to say, but stay strong

    Keep writing

    He can still.

He can still finish out his education and get his GED through the Army. I image that you are worrying but know this, we can ask for a veil of protection to surround him while he is there. Keep him in your prayers and let him know that.
