Musky mother
mammalian among
rocks and ferns and trees
the tribe follows
the ice retreat
from Europe
wresting land from
tundra
she stirs in you
before she parts you
inevitable among the trees
heavy as a boulder
insistent as oak
gentle as fern
as fecund as a pine cone.

The first two lines are a tongue-twister
Great write, I love the story you have given her. Thank you for entering the contest, good luck.

This is a wonderful, primal response to the prompt picture. The lack of punctuation lightens the poem and leaves it open to immediate absorbtion. It opens with assurance and assonance, and the line breaks lead me to pause at each succeeding image. The final four lines are inspired.

Thank you for your encouraging and incisive comments. Before I wrote her, I smelled her -- and felt her power.
