Saving Face

I breathe
to keep the hurt from stinging.
I live
to keep my heart still beating.
When I'm broken and spilled,
a drip of human flaw,
I close my eyes, and count to three,
so the stabbing blows will fade.

Every day is a challenge,
every night is a nightmare,
an endless dark I can't seem to escape.
But then you're there-
with my hand wound in yours,
and the world makes room
for your sweet embrace,
when I see your face.

I wait
for a happy day to come,
and I dream
of sun slip in the clouds.
When I'm cold and disgraced,
my soul a twisted band,
I hold my breath, and picture you,
until the tears decease.
