Newfoundland

Missing image
Here I sit,
overlooking the rocky cliffs
of Newfoundland.
Sailboats float peacefully
upon the gentle waves
of the Atlantic Ocean.
Sunlight sparkles like diamonds as
it dances upon the waves
rolling onto the shore below me.

Off in the distance an iceberg
towers high into the sky.
I'm humbled by this
beautiful mystical giant.
The purity of its colours
Is beyond compare
but as this majestic giant
slowly starts to roll
I find myself in awe.

I love the music of the Puffins,
that are perched on the cliffs below.
They’re breath taking little birds
who makes this place special.
I can only smile in amazement,
when they run across the water
or leap from the jagged rocks
to take flight and to dance
upon a soft breeze just above me.

The gentle breath of wind blows the
salty smell of the ocean to me,
suddenly a whale breaches the surface,
appearing to fly like a bird.
but as it returns
back into the watery depths,
a thunderous crash echoes
out for kilometres and
can be felt within the depths of my soul

Oh how I love it when,
fog rolls into Conception Bay.
The eerie sound of the foghorn
echoes in the distance,
sending an icy cold chill
running through my body,
I can almost hear the ocean answering back
with the moaning sounds of the doomed ships
she has taken into her icy cold depths.

I have seen many wonders around the world,
The great pyramids
that reach for the heavens above,
The cliffs of Santorini
stretching high above Mediterranean Sea,
I have walked through history in the streets of Israel, and
walked the stairs into the ancient Greek Parthenon,
even climbed the incredible heights of the Rocky Mountains, but
from the first moment,
I stepped upon the shore at Port aux Basques,

I feel as if
I've finally come Home.

  • Through the many photographs you've shared with me I have seen the beauty you capture with your camera, but it still does not compare with your words for they flow straight from your heart.

This is one of the most beautiful poems you've written and I will enjoy coming back to read it time and again.

  • A Dream!

    Hi there Ed!
    Long time,
have been busy writing short stories and family lures lol.
I am in love with this poe,you write from the heart when depicting nature. i like it better when you write these type of serious poems. You have traveled a great deal and sounds like you have found where you feel at peace with your soul. i feel the same way about Donegal as you well know. The feeling of complete tranquility is next to nothing when a body needs it.

I enjoyed your background and the pics of newfoundland are just bresah takingly beautiful. i was in the north of Africa at easter, it was lovely but still the hot weather and the culture could never ever take Donegal from my heart and soul...guess you are the same about this place.

Your images of the ocean are just great, it sounds angry then loving then unforgiving...all that the ocean can be, yet you still express your love for it. I have the exact same feelings about the sea, i love it and i can sit and look out to it when i am there in the cottage. Its the best place to be if one is looking for inspiration to write.
thanks for the journey into the beautiful.

This is a beautiful look at Newfoundland and the images you show us with your words and on the background are wonderful. I particularly like the image of the rolling iceburg as I love that type of scenery and would one day hope to see something similar in person as there is something quite majestic in the scale, power and beauty of such a place. This is beautiful, and you did take me on a mystical tour of NewFoundland. I could see the iceberg, turn as it floats by, the birds soaring over head.

    This is wonderfully written.

    Bless you dear friend.

this is a good descriptive poem, one you can really only appreciate if youve been to newfoundland A couple minor errors...in the second stanza you've written I am feel humble...perhaps should be I feel humbled or I am humbled...see what you think is best. Then just below you've written But as this (twice) you may want to get rid of one of them
