When the fire of a loved one burns out,
Into nothing--
Or the appearance of nothing--
All that remains is a tiny spark,
The rememberance of the good times and bad.
Give the smallest bit of yourself to it,
Blow at the remaining spark
Carefully, hesitantly, fully.
For all it takes is one little spark
Of a memory
To kindle in you the fire
With which they once warmed your
Slowly cooling heart.
Allow that spark of a memory
To grow into a great flame,
A flame that can never die out,
As long as you remember to remember,
Remember to give oxygen and care to it.
When in a dark and cold space,
And the memory seems so distant,
Give the spark everything that you have
So that it will never leave you,
So that the heat can warm you,
So that the light can guide you,
So that the flame can become you.
Burn on.

Wow. This is really good. I'm going to have to check the contest out now. Beautiful imagery. I loved the last few lines. Well, the enitre thing, too. But yeah. I managed a whole review on one of your poems without using "great"!!! That should mean something. It was so good, it forced me not to use a word that I constantly overuse.
