With Open Eyes

Those planes that killed three thousands,
on that day of infamy.
Where not my first persuasion,
of what there is to be.

Perhaps I should have looked,
at Iran in seventy-nine.
When Jimmy was the president,
but too terrorism, I was blind

I had no crystal ball,
no stars to read upon.
But measures were not taken,
this brought our shores to harm

Maybe if the Cole was fresh ,
and still there in my mind.
I might have seen things differently,
and reacted in quicker time.

Perhaps I should have spoken,
with Saddam and made it plain.
That people that do suffer,
go hungry and feel pain

Yet all, are of one God's children,
no matter who they serve.
Perhaps it's all my fault,
and I threw the world a curve.

But perhaps I could be Clinton,
and buy the Muslim faith,
With billions of our dollars,
to build a terror state.

But maybe I did err,
and foolish was my deeds,
Perhaps I closed my eyes,
with wishes to succeed.

It was a sad day when that war started. You have written a very good piece here. There are alternatives to violence, but they require thought. Greatflow and rhythm. Well done, I like it.

    Hi Bob,

Sorry for taking so long to comment on this. I did read it when you first posted it and was just as impressed with it then as I am now. Yours is definitely one of the wisest entries in the contest, as it does not simply bash Bush without taking into account everything that led up to 9/11 and the other events that made his presidency so difficult.

    A couple of typo's, I think -
"where not my first persuasion" (Should that be "were not . . ."?)
Also, shouldn't "foolish was my deeds" be "foolish were my deeds"?

As wonderful as this poem is, I fear it is not in line with the contest requirements - that is, an in-depth essay describing what you would have done differently. I have a feeling you know this. You're too intelligent to have ignored the contest rules. Hopefully, the writing of such a great piece was reward enough. By the comments beneath it, it appears you have quite a well-deserved following. Best of luck in all you do.

    Mark

    Thank God!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Someone has the guts to stand up and speak the truth!!!! All Presidents have made mistakes, And if Bill Clinton had been servicing his country instead of being serviced under the oval office desk, 9/11 may not have even happened...He was too busy during his administration womanizing and totally destyed Hillary's chance f being President....but all tha aside thanks fr spointing out Jimmy Cater who is now taken to appeasing the terrrists....The nerve to talk about Bush after those two...at least he has the guts to stand up and say AMERICA will not take terrorism lying down!!!! Brave to you Bob for spreading it to all who read, like it or not!!!!~~Toni~~

Oh bob!!! What a powerful message. And I am sure so many of our nations leaders are shaking their heads and going damn did I start THIS!! Or should I have seen THAT! At least I would like to think so. But everyone especially our nations leaders turn a blind eye to things and I would like to believe have remorse for it later.

    Grest Poetry

Good morning Bob. Once again your words hold so much truth in them. Yes Preident Bush made a few mistakes but as you so truthfully pointed out so have all past president. He never said he was perfect but I do believe he does love God and this country and did his best. Thank you for the thoughtful words. God bless us all with this crazy election yesr. Bush needs our prayers not all the bashing from the left and the media. You take care.

    Bless You,
    Sandy

The saddest thing of life is to think of what might have been. I do not hate anyone but I think the Bush has made a lot of errors. However, you have made a great poem out of the prompt. Congratulations and good luck in the contest. The last two lines are brilliant.

I have to be honest and say that I can not hate Bush entirely for this event.....I think that it has been many years and presidents in the making. He was barely in office before this began which leads me to wonder what exactly lit the fuse on this time bomb? You give the reader much to ponder as always....Excellent job and once again I think that you are brilliant. You say it like you see it and feel it....Not many are brave enough my friend.... Well done and best wishes

I do realize when I extend myself on here many turm away . Is it that I frighten them you think? Or does the truth cause them pain?

Very thoughtful and thought provoking. Its easy to be a liberal when the bombs are going off on distant shores. When the war was brought home, I think it was a wake up call to all of us over here that we cannot ignore. Love your references to earlier events and times, when eyes should have been opened but weren't. We must place present events in their proper historical context, if we want to see things as they truly are. We were so busy fighting the war on drugs that we lost sight of our true enemies, and the enemies of freedowm justice and human rights Excellent write!!!

No matter who is at the helm, mistakes will be made. I wish we had a crystal ball so as to not make the same mistake twice. Well done with this piece. Juls

Hindsight is a great thing isn't it! Perhaps many many things should have been done differently... not only now, but in the past...

I wonder these things myself.. yet perhaps we would always have ended up with the world the way it is..
