Claustrophobic

Gasping, shaking, twitching,
Fighting for myself
I fall into the depths
Of myself but there are walls
Far too thick and far too close
For me to breathe
And so I scream with merciless
Fury, erupting a series of shudders.
But the wall is just an image in my mind.

Clutching at my middle,
the blackness fades into gray.
They, the creatures large and ugly,
Scurry over and over my body
With the quickness of the undead,
The annoyance of a mosquito.

The monstrous atrocities
Squeak without mercy in my ears
As they come back and back still,
Over and over me, always moving.

Vision becomes clearer without them
On my face and covering my eye sockets.
The wire against my skull presses down, down,
Until it threatens my existence.
The creatures are disgusting rats,
Fighting their way out of my prison,
Scratching me until I bleed in their haste.

The cage begins to evanesce,
The rats grow larger.
Their paws become hands and feet.
Tails disappear, snouts become noses,
Bodies lengthen and lose their fur.
The cage becomes a prison cell,
The rats my wardens and cellmates.
