What women don't want, Freud

Don't bring me cut flowers.
They stink of funerals.
Look into my eyes
when we speak.
Don't bring me candy,
you wouldn't want me fat.
Touch me with affection,
when your passion has passed.
Don't patronize me
because I'm not a man.
Respect my huwomanity.
Don't try to exploit me,
because you think me weak.
Acknowledge there are
many kinds of strength.
Don't with me create a child,
then have me nourish it alone.

How difficult is that
to figure out, genius.
You wanted to be
cherished and respected.

Couldn't you consider
women might want the same?

Author notes

Famously, Freud asked,"What do women want?"

a great poem..one which i bookmarked..It says a lot of which i agree. Woman are jst as smart or smarter than man and without them there would be no romancing and..you fill in the blank..Women are One of His greatest creations cause they are not only smart but they can wooo man in many ways besides making love!

  • Good description on the candy and flowers portion. Now I might learn a lesson or two from just reading this. You did excellent!!

    • Thank you for your thoughtful comments. The jest of the last two lines is :

as you know Freud's famous question "What do women want" has as many answeres as there are women. More revealing to ask what they don't want.

    well

What , as a man, can I say to this? seems the pen is mighty and filled with anger. But perhaps you are right. But then again I have seen way to mny women who baby their men and leave themselves open to abuse

Dang... my wife has let me think she likes the flowers!

Out of context, this would be interesting in a different way:
    "Don't patronize me
because I'm not a man." (as though men need patronizing) hehehe...just kidding.

Frued was an interesting fellow indeed. I am curious as to your choosing him, if not only for the quote.

I like how the poem is instructive till the last few lines... then the rhetorical question:
    "You wanted to be
    cherished and respected.

    Couldn't you consider
    women might want the same?"

These lines are nicely placed, a good point to finish on.
btw, I wonder if Mel Gibson had it figured out when he made "What Women Want"

    • Hi James1.19Just want to thank for your

comments on this work. The Freud reference is for many reasons. Freud, like the men of my generation thought the role of women was that of a handmaiden for men. Men ruled the roost, it was even acceptable to brutalize wives and daughters. Their lot was often to be dismissed emotionaly and intellectually....but when the little lady became depressed by the inattention and abuse it could all be rectified by a posey. Symbollicaly it was the same as giving flowers to the dead. Too little too late. Unfortunatly there still seems to be an echo of those attitudes in the way some men dismiss all but the physical attributes of women, then subsuite occasional flowers or other tokens of erzarts contrition and expect that makes everything alright. All that in a couple of lines. Not bad, huh? I think Mel Gibson movie should have been titled, What Men Hope Women Want".

    I'm nearly 75 and have never known just what a woman wanted. I believe you have it in the last four lines;
    You wanted to be
    Cherished and respected.
    Couldn't you consider
    Women might want the same.
    Truly excellent.

Strong write, like that theme, "What do women want?" and the answer of what they don't want... and suggestions that even a man or genius can follow.
Liked "Huwomanity," "touch me with affection,/when your passion has passed" and "Don't with me create a child,/then have me nourish it alone."
