Priceless ACEs

Priceless is the smile
on her face -
she who was abused
battered
violated at only four years old.

Priceless is the smile
on his face -
he who was ridiculed
demeaned
called filthy names by his friends.

Priceless is the smile
on their faces -
they who were once labeled incorrigible
a threat to the classroom
those kids who will never learn.

Priceless is the smile
on each face -
as they sit in cap and gown
with their senior class
and receive their high school diploma.

Who could ever put a price tag
on even one of their miracles?

Author notes

This was read at our ACE Coffee House in honor of the "at-risk" students who persevere and reach their goal of graduation. They are each a priceless miracle....

I don't know what ACE is but I love this poem! As being an 'at risk' student grad. & having gone through the difficulties you mention in this poem I can totally identify!

ACE stands for the Alternative Center for Excellence. It is the high school at which I teach English.

Thanks so much for the encouragement!

Short and to the point. I can relate to students one and two in this poem, because I too was abused, constantly when I was youngwer, and it didn't stop until about three years ago, ergo, all my dark poetry. Thank you so much for sharing this.

This is a great positive write about those students who refused to fall through the cracks of the system and persisted to achieve their goal. These students need to be recgonized for overcoming their obstacles to education. IT CAN BE DONE and these students are proof! Thanks for sharing this uplifting poem.

Can I assume that you were blessed enough to play a part in each miracle? It's instances like these that are a reminder that as long as there is breath, each person still has a chance, and that one CAN rise above one's circumstances if he/she will but try.

Moving piece Jo, heartfelt. Shows there is hope for those that have a harder time in life that aren't believed in.
