against the current

here
on this endless sea of mediocrity
sails hang limp
no comforting breezes propel us along
only endless ripples of sameness

overhead
low lying clouds of stifling familiarity
block sunlit creativity from breaking through to our dulled senses

together
we pull hard against the opposing current
never yielding to the common flow
defiantly singing aloud seafarer's songs of heroic days
when explorers of the miraculouus roamed foreign waters
discovering new islands of hybrid humanity
radical individuality

ancestral sailor poets whisper encouragement
uplift our spirits
steel our wills
as vision strains towards a horizon painfully distant

suddenly from the haze
our sundrenched deepest passions in outrigger canoes
paddle ferociously towards us
chanting in one voice their powerful greeting
our thoughts racing wildly
inspired hearts pounding proudly
triumphantly
excidedly anticipating imminent release from an oppressive banality

    Outstanding

This poem is very creative with exotic images that intrigue and build an in depth picture. There is a lot to enjoy in this poem - the language is well chosen and I liked the way you created so much contrast with the despair and boredom of the opening changing to warm passion by the end of the poem. An interesting poem with a well developed theme.

Ah, the annoyance of "sameness" It is better to be different and unique, wouldn't you agree? Ah, very nice poem. It was very interesting. And I must say, I liked it a lot. Thank you for giving me something to read that I surely don't recall reading before. Keep up the great writing and I really hope to read more from you.

That's what I want to be when I grow up.
    An "explorer(s) of the miraculous."
