Risk

`





A roster of rooms, all on the ground floor
with hallways connecting identical doors,
carpets maintained in a communal vacuum;
a no-man’s land; no owner must presume.

Safety assured behind hinges and latches;
phone books delivered in big yellow batches.
Corridors barren of lingering eyes,
loitering topcoats present drooping disguise.

Only when door cracks the amber'd veneer
do youthful dare and vitality appear.
When widened apertures defy convention,
risk intrusion, allow sweet intervention.

Frendship is often a sour-sweetened meal.
As Lewis said, “Pain’s part of the deal.”

    I really like the rhyming scheme and flow of this poem. Nice description of the setting.

    "Frendship is often a sour-sweetened meal.
