Now We Go Our Separate Ways

And now we go our separate ways,
your path diverges now from mine.
Where once they crossed, then merged, to wind,
together down through all our days.

And memories do line our road,
as we collect them in our heads,
for now you travel on ahead,
two different lives, two different loads.

I do suppose I'll carry on;
it's how life seems to work these days--
no good thing e'er forever stays.
Life passes ever her baton.

So many things I'll ne'er forget,
the love, the moments, and the smiles.
I hoped that you might stay awhile
before we end our brief duet.

But time now beckons you to go,
and all of nature knows it's right,
for on this chapter dims the light.
What happens next? I cannot know.

So now we go our separate ways,
and all that's left is memories,
but they will keep me strong for thee,
until we meet again one day.

Author notes

Well, I'm a bit of a sap. But to make a long story short, some friends of mine who are seniors are now leaving for college, and I'm not sure when I'll see them again except on a few rare occasions. It's just sad to see them go. But I know it's how it ought be-- a chapter has simply closed in my life, now another one begins. Still, it's sad. Hence, I wrote a rather bad poem to help me get it out. Thanks for reading,

Dan

Hope to see more of your poems posted soon. Tough to see others leave for further education and everyone go their own and separate ways. You can now look forward to that 10 year reunion when you can see many of them again. Sentiments well expressed in these lines; easy to read and understand.
