Fugue

I hear the tones, but do not know who plays them,
Resounding through the walls I call my home.
Those trembling drones -- a life of fear relays them;
I've known this song: My own soul's lingering one.
But do I hear a voice? (O, how she sings it!)
I feel her, fear her taking me too far!
I would recoil -- I would for what hope brings it?
So long was silence -- safety -- not desire.
I fear the kiss I know she does not give me.
I feel the kiss I fear she never will.
From my own heart, should self-restraint outlive me?
Like to a falling star, that Night would still!
I've heard the Fugue of my whole life crescending,
And finally know the chords to mark its ending.
