Separate but equal.
Memorised and frail.
One exhale, and gasp for breath
And even pace, a rise of chest.
We lay beside each other, clasping hands
your fingers fit so beautifully between mine
You count love's worth on your fingertips
Those I've let go show you you are the only one
You can have one true love, and only one love.
Would leaving the friends behind make you happy?
She wasn't a lover, merely a memory
She cried when I said goodbye and I pray she never forgives me.
And my childhood friend with his legs dangling over a ledge
said he hoped you were worth it, our friendship was dead
You could be my family
but not my only family
You could be my only friend
but not my only family.
When you left, I won't go back
on what I said
but I'm frail and I can't breathe
for my blood can't pump without the heart
that both of us shared.
