It’s rainy weather out today,
But, it’s sunny warm and grand,
To the happy little skipping girl,
Who hangs on daddy’s hand.
They’re off to visit grandmas’
It’s a place she loves to go,
Where the dust is full of fairy tales,
Only grandmas can bestow.
She has a piece of scrimshaw,
From a whaling vessel’s hold,
And there’s a bank that looks the part,
Of a pirate hunting gold.
And an old refrigerator
Still keeps her ice-cream cold,
And she gives it out in giant scoops,
For which mama would scold.
That, young lady, will not do,
Your dinner will be spoiled,
But, grandma only winks and smiles
When mom’s rules are foiled.
The attic rooms are dusty,
And they hold million things,
From books with gilded pictures,
To necklaces and rings.
And dresses made of lace and silk,
And shoes with clunky heels,
And roller skates without the shoes,
A skate key for the wheels.
Grandma makes them fit with these
And if she falls while skating,
She’ll get a cookie and a kiss,
What could be more elating?
And, here are funny little blocks,
She calls them dominoes,
And grandma keeps them in the box,
For games only she knows.
Oh, grandma’s house is fun for her,
When outside days turn gray,
For treats and story books and, sure,
Such wondrous times at play.
Son now she draws, with crayons right,
A picture just for her,
To tell grandma she loves her so,
And she always will for sure.
And, she giggles as she squirrels inside,
Her daddy’s car to leave,
They’re on their way to grandmas
And the land of make believe.

Delightful poem and a worthy HM, I personally would have liked a little more attention paid to stanza sizes but it rhymes and flows well and was a delight to read.
