i get what you mean taking his light with him but it sounds like he left it behind ... thing is if he never had it, it is nowhere really ? ...

The image is just the firefly landing: the story itself is about an old friend of mine who relied very heavily on others to make him happy. He could never make his own joy and carry it in his heart ("never learned to take his light with him"). A firefly, on the other hand, has its light with it wherever it goes.
