Freedom to Soar

Silver blue and shining violet
Swiftly flows from cloud to cloud;
Dark claws descend upon twinkling stars
And smooth scales glisten in the moonlit night;
A hiss and groan of a great throat of heat,
Fiery waves flash from between ivory fangs.
Shadowy wings clip the water and magic
Glides to the Earth.
What is this we have,
But a mystical sight of a wondrous
Dragon soaring through the night?

The deep black eyes of an untamed
Creature glimmer and smolder
Like the sleeping sun,
And as its tail whips and slides,
The beast shimmers like that
Of the rising moon and stars.
Spirits become unsettled at
This mysterious view of such a
Magnificent creature of
Dim violet and navy blue.
How has this being come to be,
Such a stupendous and an amazing thing,
With wings so strong and heart so pure?
How did it become so free to soar?

Perhaps it’s time for us to learn from
Such wonderful sights and let our
Own hearts fly free through the mist-filled nights.

Author notes

To Mrs. Callahan, a great librarian!
May your heart soar, too!!

This poem goes with a dragon painting that I did for "Mrs. Callahan," whom was in charge of the library and OTS Book Club at my old school.
