A first memory, vague but important,
a pony beneath him as Daddy held him on,
and then one day he was on his own
as Dad watched proudly his little cowboy.
It was much like riding a bike
only the pony was alive, thrilling
like nothing he'd ever known
to be on his own now.
Daddy was such a hard worker
and the little cowboy
was right at his side
cleaning stalls, learning to be a furrier,
learning the Texan way of life.
He learned to ride and learned to care for his horse,
rode to the feed store with his dad.
He took his first pinch of snuff at sixteen,
and he learned to spit without hitting himself at seventeen.
Riding the ranch along with the hands,
he grew to love and respect the land.
He loved the Texas sky that was like no other,
the perfect blue with scattered and billowing clouds.
Watching his Daddy with his Mom,
he learned to be a gentleman with the ladies
and his way was to protect the gentle breed
as well as children as he grew.
The memories flowed back to him
as he stood at the fence with his pipe
(the one for which he had traded his snuff)
and watched the sunset
over the ranch left to him by his father,
the one on which he had learned the Texas way of life.

The moral of this story is
Cowboys DO get lucky sometimes....
Some of them are fortunate enough to live in the same state you write about and that happens to be my home.
Best of luck in the contest.
Sincerely,
Leo Long

W.B sweetie. Having visited Texas on quite a few occasions I am sure have have met my fair share of "hims" . Yes, there is something about Texas and the one thing I have seen , admired and know "The Texas sky is like no other". Often I just stood and admired it [not sure what it is, but something about it holds the heart captive. Very nicely dedcribed my friend , and I wish you the best,
much love

Aww, hi Sweetie! Thank you. Yes, there is something about the Texas sky. I had heard about it, but I didn't believe it until I stood under it and stared in awe. Whatever it is, the Texas sky has a hypnotic force that holds me captive and makes me feel so good about being here.
It's so great to see you. I've missed you, my lovely friend.
