We walk as we leave,
Our families still watch.
They wave their sad waves
As we board the jets,
Leaving for our deployments
Our cammies weigh us down,
We slow our steps,
Take our last glance back,
As the hatch shuts
Going overseas,
for who knows how long?
Going overseas,
Will we come back alive?
The Engines are turning,
We're taxiing away
Oh yes,
My friends and family,
we hear the trumpets call
We march off to battle
We're leaving,
On a jetplane
Our families still watch.
They wave their sad waves
As we board the jets,
Leaving for our deployments
Our cammies weigh us down,
We slow our steps,
Take our last glance back,
As the hatch shuts
Going overseas,
for who knows how long?
Going overseas,
Will we come back alive?
The Engines are turning,
We're taxiing away
Oh yes,
My friends and family,
we hear the trumpets call
We march off to battle
We're leaving,
On a jetplane
Author notes
I'm a Marine. I haven't done my first deployment in Iraq yet, but I will in a couple months. But just saying goodbye to my friends and family now is hard enough, knowing that sometimes dangerous situations come up in training environments.

I still hate the parking lot where I had to say goodbye to my Mairnes. I thought it was funny that you have "Im leaving on a jetplane" as the last line. The guys here at MCBH sang that right before they went to Iraq last year. except they were super moto. 11s are like that. good write though. I really like these lines "We slow our steps,
Take our last glance back," -

Well, I put that there because of the contest title. But every time I have ever left home, left my loved ones, be it family, friend, or love, that song has always popped into my head. And most Marines are moto, except the ones who don't want anything to do with the Corps. But every one of us is slightly scared, even if we don't admit it...

I dont think that the subconsious fear ever goes away. my guys are gearing up for another deployment here really soon and most of them still wake up freaked out reaching for a weapon or searching for a friend because of the last trip over. sucks with fourth of july coming up. Fireworks set them off the worst.
