That shines for a mother's son.
Though he won't be coming home
In her heart he lives on,
A memory time can't erase.
In the darkness of night it glows brightly
Like a beacon shining down from above
And a tear stained face in a window pane
Gazes upward and silently preys..
"Oh God in Heaven, be kind to us mothers
Whose boys are far over seas
Though I know some won't return
For a halo they've earned
Please protect the others from harm"
In each home tonight someone kneels
As a cloud passes over the moon
And though the world grow dark
In God's Haven above
That gold star shines brightly on.
Author notes
The Gold Star Lapel Button was established by Act of Congress to provide an appropriate identification for widows, widowers, parents, and next of kin of members of the Armed Forces of the United States who lost their lives during World War I, World War II, or other armed conflicts in which the United States was engaged. The Gold Star Lapel Button consists of a gold star on a purple circular background, bordered in gold and surrounded by gold laurel leaves. On the reverse is the inscription "United States of America, Act of Congress, August 1966" with space for engraving the initials of the recipient.

This is so sad and so beautiful
What an excellent heart felt piece here with such truth and the love lost in our most trying times to keep peace upon this land . Great write here .I have 20 poems from different poets and myself on my page for our soldiers and the titles are on the right that makes a poem in itself

A wonderful tribute to those brave enough to stand and fight for our freedom. Without these brave souls our comfortable world would fall into chaos. I know there are those who would say they are not perfect, but I would say to them, are we?
Excellent tribute.

"In God's Haven above
That gold star shines brightly on."
Lovely words and very encouraging. Even in loss and darkness we can find peace in His love. Very nice. THank you for entering.

A heart warming write my long-ago-friend. Beautifully penned. I am sure there are many mothers praying a prayer such as this. I love the "Gold Star." Such a lovely piece of poetry.

This is a well written poem with a great meaning.
I had a family member overseas a few years back, and it was a trying time, never knowing what news could come or how safe my loved one was.
I enjoyed reading. Thanks for posting it for everyone to see. -
