Memorial Day was always special
in an unusual kind of way
We always took a trip to the cemetery
to decorate graves and pray
Relatives would come to visit
for Decoration Day was a holiday
They used this day for a family reunion
together we celebrated on 30 May
It had a special meaning to me
for 30 May was my birthday
Mom would always bake a cake for me
and decorate it her special way
It was a disappointment to me
when the President changed the name
From Decoration to Memorial
it just never was quite the same
He even changed the date to honor
and took away the 30 May
Put it on a Monday and
took away my holiday
Memorial Day to me is still special
a time to remember our loved ones
Who gave their lives in the Nations' service
and honor our flag with a job well done
