The Storm

It started out with just a mist,
Then a downpour,
Adding baseball sized hail
And a ton of wind.

Soon the electricity went out,
And everyone was screaming.
The teachers were yelling
"Get in the classrooms!!!!"

We stood around for ten minutes,
Then stampeded downstairs
As a tornado warning
Came sweeping through town.

We sat in the dark hallway
For probably a half an hour,
Waiting for it to pass.
We were on lockdown twice.

When we could finally leave three hours later,
It didn't look so bad outside,
Not until I went downtown
And saw the damage.

The F3 storm had swept away half the city.
The highest wind speed was 200 mph.
It took out trees, powerlines and homes.
Businesses were gone.

60 families were left without homes,
Huge trees that had been there for years were gone.
The clean-up began immediately,
And the community came together to help.

Now, two days later,
People are just beginning to go home
To pack up their belongings
And find a new home.

They only let the Mormons and homeowners in.
The Mormons are helping as much as possible.
The women preparing food for the workers,
And the men doing the clean-up.

I myself have made food,
Helped clean up even.
I haven't yet seen the extent of the damage,
But I've heard it's horrible.

This storm has brought our community together,
But it shouldn't be what brings us in.
We should help eachother all the time,
But I guess with the way the world is today
We can't seem to do that.

Author notes

This tornado brought our community together, but like I said, a storm should NOT be what brings us together. We should help eachother no matter what, but people are too selfish. The Mormons (including my family) have been able to go into the blocked off area to help with the clean up and the families that are gathering their belongings. In order to go in, you have to be wearing a yellow shirt that says "Mormon Helping Hands" on it... it also says on the back "Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints". Please pray for the families that have lost their homes. No one was hurt too seriously, but losing your home can be just as devastating as losing a life. You can't get memories back with a new home, you can only bring in new ones.

Is there anything wrong??!?!?

Wow. This was very touching. I'm fortunate enough to only be living though a drought, nothing else really happens here. I was quite surprised nothing dramatic happened to the school while all the students where inside. Also, you're very correct about the way our communities are today. Shocking. Anyway, great work

Dude, we have people from Lakewood and Castle Rock driving down here to help, it's so awesome. It's hard to believe that people are actually coming to help. Congratulations that you were able to help. The Drama club sorted clothing donations at the old Steele's Market building all day yesterday.... It's awesome.
