Day dreaming

We started out in high school
boyfriend and girlfriend for that one year
Then after I graduated
I was ripped away,
sent out of state
our love they threw away.

They didn't understand how it could be true
we were too young they said.
What they didn't know is we wouldn't forget.
thoughts of each other crisscrossed our minds
over these many years since.

I did not think I would love another
but at last I really did.
so I married him.
I put you out of my mind
tucked away in the corner of my heart

in touch here and there
but we weren't free
others we had gave our lives too
so we mainly kept it too
Happy Birthday, Merry Christmas,
and Yes I'm still alive,

sometimes I struggled to leave it there,
as I'm sure you did too
but I love the man that I married
my life belonged to him
I did not dare to break my vows
it was not in me to do.
Now after 26 years he says he doesn't love me
has no plans to ever come home
and though I still love him,
I can not go on alone this way

I know people will not understand,
Some will think I cheated on him
others will think you are a rebound love
but neither of these things are true
I have just finally accepted the truth
love can not live from one side
So I opened the cage I kept my heart in
and I am allowing it to be free
to soar and to love
and to you
it flew again
