Oh my! A shooting! People died!
The world huddles in fear,
but then-- who cares? I know I don't;
It didn't happen here.
Looks like a bomb went off today,
left many folks in tears,
but I don't care, why should I care?
It didn't happen here.
A boy's grandma just died today,;
he held her close and dear.
She wasn't mine, why should I care?
It didn't happen here.
A government went bad today,
Its people live in fear,
but not my government! Oh well!
It didn't happen here.
A cyclone killed thousands today,
and aid cannot get near,
but wasn't my home it destroyed;
it didn't happen here.
A driver killed my dad today;
was some guy full of beer;
but no one helped-- what did they say?
"It didn't happen here."

This is disgustingly true. I mean, your poem is beautifully tragic and ugly but the truth that this holds is something no one wants to admit but who really does take the time to step back and offer sympathy and help when it doesn't ivolve us or we get nothing out of it? If we begin to shower compassion on one another purely from our hearts, I believe the world will rekindle some of the joy it lost.

Wow. This is so true. Most of today's society couldn't care less when something bad happens to someone else. Instead we just go on thinking nothing like that could happen to us. It's very sad really. Great write Xel. It speaks volumes! -Liz

Reminds me of Richard Peck's poem
That's why I read it, the title sounded familiar. I like where you took the last line, and it says a lot about society. People try to sympathize sometimes... but it doesn't work, because in the back of their minds they don't think it could ever happen to them
. The irony of it is the last line, when the narrator of the poem never cared about bad things happening elsewhere, and no one cared that something bad happened to him. Powerful statement =D!
GREAT job
diggin it majorly
