America's Best

Civilized nation?
Oxymoron

No respect for religion
of the enemy
humiliating treatment
done by
American hands

All captured in Kodak Color
Maybe a spot on America’s Funniest Videos?

Pork and nakedness
weapons
Could we sink any lower?

Slutty girl/man
cigarette dangling
shames the nation

Gross indecencies
Spotlight on America

We hold ourselves up
as an example - of what?
Arrogance, hatred, slovenliness?

In poems writhing with
disbelief - honor what?

Does showing a man’s penis,
while his hands are bound
behind him show America
at its best?

Who  had the decency and morals?
America displaying ignorance,
or men to whom modesty is
a lifelong practice. . .

God Fucking Bless America

If I know and turn away - say it's an "army thing", then I have drawn blood and been smeared with it for my shame.

    Very strong and powerful.
    Should be read out loud.
Cannot condemn all of "America' for this, but the blame sure needed to go way on up the totem pole.

It was a hard contest to write for.

    great entry1
    thanks for entering

Tough contest to write for wasn't it? We know what we feel but to translate it to a poem somehow -- finding the right words, well it was difficult for me.

Good luck to you in the contest.

A piece of poetry with such a strong condemnation within the timbre of the Poet's voice that it resonates even after the end line, I bless America, not all Americans are responsible for the lines crossed by the undisciplined sadistic acts carried out by some soldiers serving, but anyone who dismisses this behaviour or who advocates it is partly responsible surely?

Very powerful and filled with justified disgust and anger. Can anyone still believe that one side has a monopoly on goodness and moral decency? There are inhuman brutes in every nation. Your poem points out an unpalatable truth in strong style.
