I Believe In Love

It wasn’t very long ago
We had visions and fantasies
Of wonderful romance
And a life together
Is it over?
There are times
When we see how
The heart’s emotions
Can be so fickle
And when it seems like
Nothing lasts forever
One may ask
“Can love last?”
Relationships are never easy
And sometimes love
Is an emotional highway
With highs and lows,
Twist and turns
Mountains and valleys,
So one can understand
The caution
Or even how cynical one can be
At the question
“Can love last?”
Philosophers, poets and wise men
Since the beginning of time
Tried to answer
“Can love last?”
When I ask myself the question
Here’s what I think:
I am just a man like so many others
It is so easy to say, “I love you!”
And yet what does this mean?
Words can be said so very easily,
Because love is only a word,
Without meaning or life.
And isn’t true until proven right.
Love can slip away,
Misunderstandings can occur
And emotions are fickle.
But love, when it is right—endures.
It is too easy to find fault
And difficult to have faith in each other,
Yet, “true” love overcomes
Misunderstandings, hardships
And unfulfilled expectations.
Love rises above all difficulties
I believe in the word “love”
With all its possibilities.
Love can open hearts
And tear down walls
But more than this
I believe in us.
Because it is only
In your heart and mine,
That will truly answer this question,
And when the skies become dark and gray.
Know that my love for you will always anticipate the rain
And conquer any storm.
So, come, my darling,
Let us open our hearts once again.
To each other,
And like water flowing
Believe in us
With a wonderful future
Of you and me.
