My First Date – Ian
Waited restless all day long
With nervous twitch and silent song
For Jane had said a definite yes
Thought she’d decline I must confess.
I barely made it through the day
My pulse was racing thoughts would stray
To protocols on my first date
For starters better not be late.
Inspection in the mirror near,
Instructions from my Mother dear,
She straightens tie caresses hair
And Father grins from favourite chair.
He hands me keys to precious car
And says he’ll leave front door ajar,
Then tells me not to be too late
And wake him with the squeaking gate.
I hurry to Jane’s nearby place
To see her Father’s watchful face
In silhouette through open door
And wonder now just what’s in store.
He sits me down and quizzes me,
And really leads me up a tree
He sounds so stern, and yet he’s not,
My pulse is racing, forehead hot.
Then Jane appears in flowing gown
Miss Universe of this small town
She kisses Father, doting Ma
And strides majestic to the car.
I fumble keys a little while
While Jane turns on resplendent smile,
Then courage catches up with me
We’re off down town and fancy free.
